Canyoning Sušec: A First-Time Visitor’s Guide to Soča Valley’s Natural Water Park
If you are visiting the Soča Valley for the first time and want to experience something more adventurous than hiking and sightseeing, canyoning in Sušec is one of the best places to start.
Located only about 7 km from Bovec in the direction of Kobarid, Sušec Canyon is often described as a natural water park. Instead of artificial slides and swimming pools, imagine clear mountain water, smooth rock formations, small waterfalls and natural pools hidden between the mountains of the Soča Valley.
The experience combines walking, swimming, sliding down naturally polished rocks, jumping into pools and descending through the canyon under the supervision of a professional guide. It is adventurous, refreshing and probably one of the most memorable ways to experience the landscape around Bovec.

Why Sušec Is a Great Choice for Your First Canyoning Experience
There are several canyoning locations around Bovec, ranging from relatively accessible adventures to much more technical descents involving high waterfalls and extensive rope work. Sušec is particularly popular with people trying canyoning for the first time. Its relatively easy access, natural slides, pools and manageable waterfalls make it an excellent introduction to this outdoor activity.
You do not need previous canyoning experience. Your guide explains how to move safely through the canyon and how to approach the different slides, jumps and descents.
That does not mean Sušec is boring. Quite the opposite.
As you move deeper into the canyon, the adventure gradually becomes more exciting. You will follow the water downstream, slide over smooth rock, swim through refreshing pools and tackle waterfalls of different sizes. Some sections provide more adrenaline, while others give you time to simply enjoy being surrounded by rock, forest and mountain water.
Sušec is therefore a particularly good option for couples, groups of friends, families with older children and first-time canyoners looking for an active experience without choosing one of the Soča Valley’s more demanding canyons.
For the guided experience offered through Dolina Soče, the minimum age is 10 years, participants must be able to swim, and good general physical condition is recommended.
What Happens During Canyoning in Sušec?
There are no manufactured attractions here. The water has shaped the rock over thousands of years, creating smooth channels, pools and slides that make the canyon feel like a playground created entirely by nature.
Depending on the section, you may:
- slide down naturally formed rock slides,
- jump into clear mountain pools,
- swim through narrow sections,
- walk between waterfalls,
- descend with the assistance of your guide,
- and experience a 12-meters rope descent at one of the waterfalls.
The complete experience takes approximately three hours, including transportation, changing into equipment, the walk to the canyon, safety instructions and the canyoning itself.
And yes—the water is refreshing. Especially on a hot summer day, that is very much part of the experience.
Practical Tips Before You Go Canyoning in Sušec
You do not need to bring technical canyoning equipment. For the guided tour, the wetsuit, neoprene shoes, helmet and harness are provided. You should bring swimmer, a towel and dry clothes for afterwards.
Canyoning is an outdoor activity, so you should be reasonably comfortable with water, walking uphill and moving over uneven natural terrain. Swimming ability is mandatory. If you have medical conditions, mobility limitations or injuries that could affect participation, check whether the activity is suitable before booking.
The main canyoning season runs through the warmer months, and places can fill quickly during the summer. Advance booking is therefore recommended, especially if your itinerary gives you only one or two days in Bovec.

If this is your first trip to the Soča Valley, canyoning is also easy to combine with other experiences. You can spend another day rafting or kayaking on the Soča River, explore the surroundings of Bovec, visit waterfalls and historic sites, or simply slow down and enjoy the mountains.
But if you want one experience that captures what this part of Slovenia is all about— wild nature, vlear water, mountains and a drenaline – Sušsec is a very good place to begin.
You may arrive in the canyon wondering why anyone would voluntarily slide down a wet rock.
A few hours later, you may be wondering when you can do it again.
However, if you are looking for an even more demanding canyoning experience, Fratarica Canyon is one of the best choices in the Soča Valley.

But don’t underestimate Sušec Canyon – it is still an exciting and quite challenging adventure.
