Great Soča Gorge: Explore Two Gorges on One Riverside Walk
If you are visiting the Soča Valley for the first time, the Great Soča Gorge (Velika korita Soče) is one of the most memorable places to see the river.

What to See at the Great Soča Gorge
The Great Soča Gorge is about 750 metres long, only a few metres wide in places and around 15 metres deep. It lies roughly 11 kilometres from Bovec, near the turn for the Lepena Valley. At the downstream end, a bridge gives you access to the area where the narrow gorge opens out and the river becomes calmer.
There is also an upstream access point about a kilometre farther along the Bovec–Vršič road.
You cannot walk through the gorge itself. A marked forest path offers views from selected places along its edge, so allow time to stop and look rather than expecting an uninterrupted view of all 750 metres.
Keep back from exposed edges: rocks and paths can be slippery, especially after rain.
Don’t Miss the Small Soča Gorge
The Small Soča Gorge (Mala korita Soče) is upstream from the Great Gorge, near the village of Soča. It is shorter but strikingly narrow: approximately 100 metres long, up to 6 metres deep and just one metre wide at its tightest point. The stone bridge over the river is a good place to see it.
For visitors arriving by car, the local tourist board identifies a parking area beside the Bovec–Vršič road at the turn for Vrsnik and Vas na Skali. The gorge also lies on the Soča Trail, making it a natural starting point for a walk toward the Great Gorge.
Hike the Soča Trail Between the Two Gorges
The Soča Trail follows the river from its source toward Bovec, crossing it on picturesque footbridges and passing through woodland and meadows. You do not need to hike its full 25 kilometres to enjoy it. The section between the Small and Great Soča Gorges lets you see two very different stretches of the river on one outing.
Start at the Small Soča Gorge and follow the marked trail downstream toward Bovec to reach the Great Soča Gorge. Bring suitable walking shoes, water and a trail map. Although the full route is technically undemanding, it includes short steep sections; allow extra time for viewpoints and photographs. A Must-See in Slovenia: When to Visit the Great Soča Gorge
The Great Soča Gorge is one of the Soča Valley’s most beautiful natural sights, so it attracts plenty of visitors. If you come in July or August, especially around midday, expect to share the viewpoints and riverside areas with other people. A busy visit may feel different from the peaceful photographs you have seen, but the gorge is still worth seeing. Allow yourself time to walk beyond the busiest viewpoint and enjoy the river along the Soča Trail.
For a quieter visit, consider June or September, or arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
From Bovec by Bus: Visit the Small Gorge, Hike to the Great Gorge and Return
In the bus operating season, you can plan this as a one-way walk without a car. Take the Bovec–Trenta/Vršič bus from Bovec and get off at the Soča stop. Walk to the Small Soča Gorge at the stone bridge, then follow the marked Soča Trail downstream to the Great Soča Gorge. After your visit, walk to the Lepena junction stop on the regional road and take a bus back to Bovec.
Check the timetable before you leave Bovec. Confirm that both your outward and return buses operate on your chosen date, and allow enough time to walk between each stop, the gorges and the trail. The bus does not stop at the Great Gorge viewpoint itself. Services are seasonal, and stop arrangements may change; use the latest information when planning your trip.
There Is More to Discover Along the Soča Trail
The Great Soča Gorge is just one highlight of the 25-kilometre Soča Trail, which follows the river from its source toward Bovec. Along the way, you can also see the Small Soča Gorge, cross scenic footbridges and explore the Trenta Valley. You can walk the entire trail or choose a shorter section that suits your day. Whichever you choose, leave time for the places between the gorges: there is much more to see in this part of the Soča Valley than a single viewpoint.
